Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

This is one of the questions that a lot of non-Christians will ask because they can’t understand why a loving, merciful, graceful God could allow those things to happen.  When I was a student at Bear Valley there was a gentleman changing a flat tire in the parking lot that asked this very question.  He seemed very interested because of the after math of Hurricane Katrina.

We want to be able to blame some thing or someone for the troubles that we are going through at the time.  There are times when our suffering is our own fault or even the result of someone else’s actions.  However, there are times when it is simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  The wise man observed,

“I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning nor favor to men of ability; for time and chance overtake them all. Moreover, man does not know his time: like fish caught in a treacherous net and birds trapped in a snare, so the sons of men are ensnared at an evil time when it suddenly falls on them” (Ecclesiastes 9:11-12).

While Hurricane Harvey has caused an unbelievable amount of destruction, there is no need to place blame on anyone.  This is one of those “time and chance” situations.  Instead, we should recognize the dire situation our fellow man is in.  We need to pray, and we need to be willing to help in whatever way we can.

Jesus in His sermon on the mount said, “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). We have an opportunity to shine the light of Jesus and glorify God.

“So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith” (Galatians 6:10).
