psalm 91

The Wings of God

I haven’t spent a lot of time in nature, but I have seen birds cover their young with their wings protecting them from danger. This is a natural and instinctual reaction. Jesus, speaking in Matthew 23:37, used this imagery to describe His desire to protect and save Jerusalem. It reminds me of the desire I have to protect my own children in times of danger, and to comfort them when they are hurting. But where can I go in moments of stress, danger, and pain?

We don’t always feel like there is someone there to protect us when we need it, but we see in scripture that God is there. He is ready to protect you and give you refuge under His wings. In Psalm 91, we read, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!’ For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.”

When you feel like you are at the end of your rope, you’re not. God has been waiting for you to reach out to Him, to call on Him to be your shield and protector. He can extend that rope, give you more time, and deliver you from whatever troubles you may be facing. Seek the refuge of the wings of God!
