How Can We Live Faithful Christian Lives?

The road to heaven is not an easy one (Matthew 7:13, 14). Christians face many obstacles in trying to travel the “strait and narrow” path that leads to everlasting life. The devil opposes us, trying to get us to sin, and demons assist him in his work. The world itself and the people in it are constantly attempting to lure us away from Christ and into worldly activities. In addition, we are tempted by the weakness of our own flesh to surrender to sin (James 1:13–15). Sometimes continuing to be faithful to the Lord seems impossible.

However, we should not lose heart. We need to see that God is there to strengthen us (Philippians 4:13; Ephesians 3:20) and understand that we can do it! If we try to do it by ourselves, we will fail, but with the Lord’s help we can succeed. Notice the divine aid we receive:

  • God hears our prayers (Matthew 7:7–11) and will not allow us to be tempted beyond our ability to resist (1 Corinthians 10:13).
  • Christ dwells in us (Colossians 1:27), is always with us (Matthew 28:20), helps us when we are tempted (Hebrews 2:17, 18), acts as our mediator with the Father (1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25), and strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).
  • The Holy Spirit has been given to us (Acts 2:38; 5:32; Ephesians 1:13, 14; Romans 5:5; Galatians 4:6) to help us in our prayers (Romans 8:26) and to strengthen us (Ephesians 3:16).
  • The church encourages us (Hebrews 3:12, 13; 10:24).
  • The Word of God meets our spiritual needs (2 Timothy 3:16, 17), enables us to grow spiritually (1 Peter 2:2), and builds us up so that we can have an “inheritance among all those who are sanctified” (Acts 20:32).

The Christian’s hope is not based on a perfect life or faultless adherence to a set of rules, but on God’s grace! Because of His grace and Christ’s sacrifice, we can expect to experience the rewards promised to those who live the faithful Christian life!
