The Mustard Seed

Matthew 13:31,32

The kingdom of heaven predominated the teachings of Jesus. Why did he spend so much time talking about the kingdom? The Jews had great misconceptions concerning what the kingdom was going to be like, and who would be a part of it. The Jews had failed to properly prepare themselves for the true kingdom of heaven.

Jesus uses the mustard seed to show them that the kingdom may start small, but will grow to be very large like a mustard plant. The Jews wanted to see the kingdom come with earthshaking power. They wanted to see the wicked punished and the righteous justified.

What we see in the mustard seed is not just the smallness, but the potential for growth. We need to focus on the planting of the gospel seed in people’s hearts. Sometimes we can undervalue what God’s word can do and we fail to plant the seed. If we don’t plant the seed we will not see the growth of the kingdom. Let’s do our part in helping the kingdom grow by planting and watering and see what God can do! (1 Corinthians 3:6-8).
