Judging a Church By Its Size

When you visit a small congregation what do you think? On the other hand, when you visit a large congregation what do you think? We tend to see small congregations as inactive, not evangelistic, or not doing the will of God and that is why they are small. We look at large congregations and think the opposite, “Look at all the programs, look at all they are doing, look at the numbers… this church is doing the Lord’s will.” In the eyes of man size matters, but in the eyes of the Lord, does it really matter?

Certainly, God wants all men to be saved (2 Peter 3:9). However, when Jesus sent messages to the seven churches of Asia in Revelation chapters two and three, He wasn’t concerned over their size. Jesus was concerned about their faithfulness. Isn’t that what it all comes down to anyway? If we will simply live by faith following the will of God, everything else will fall into place as it should. Big or small, are we doing what Jesus desires?

I received these points in an email this week about the benefits of a small congregation:

•Easier to know everyone. (3 John 14)

•Stronger sense of family. (1 Tim 5:1-2)

•More inter-generational ties. (Mark 10:28-30)

•More opportunities to serve. (Ga 5:13)

•Greater tolerance towards one’s efforts. (1 Tim 4:12)

•More likely to be missed. (1 Th 5:14)

•More likely to grow. (2 Tim 2:2)
